Diary of Erk. – Day 92 at Ems Resort

October 25, 2025

It's been another long day. The rain doesn’t stop, and the air is thick with the smell of rot—of things we used to be able to ignore. But now? Now it’s just part of the backdrop. I don’t know how many days I’ve been keeping this journal. I lost count a while ago. If anything happens to me, I want someone to know what’s been going on here. What really happened.

The generator’s running low on fuel. That’s the biggest issue right now. We've got just enough to keep the base running, but it won’t last forever. Without it, we’re dead in the water. No lights, no heat, no running water. I don’t know if I can face going back out there. But it’s a risk we have to take. If we don’t get more gasoline soon, we’re finished.

Zara and Luis volunteered to go. They said they'd stick to the old highway. Said they knew of an abandoned gas station to the south west —maybe a long shot, but we’re down to nothing. I didn’t want them to go, but what choice do we have?

The undead haven’t been too active around the resort lately. Most of them seem to be shuffling aimlessly toward the southern border, where... who knows what waits. We've avoided that area as best we can. People say no one ever comes back from there. Some of the older ones talk about it like it's cursed. I’m not sure I believe in curses, but the stories are enough to keep me away.

We’ve had a few run-ins with the bandits. There’s this group—call themselves “The Raiders.” They’ve been tearing through the countryside, taking what they can. The last time we crossed paths, they ambushed us just outside the fence. They’ve got weapons, but they’re not well-organized, not like the company. Still, they know how to use fear to their advantage. We lost James.

I still hear his voice sometimes when the wind howls outside the walls.

Anyway, we shot them up pretty good. Got enough supplies back to patch ourselves up, but... I know it’s just a matter of time before they come back, and next time, they might bring more people. Or worse.

The company... I don’t even want to think about them. We haven’t seen them in person—at least, I don’t think so—but we’ve heard enough. From the other survivors, the ones who’ve managed to get away. There are whispers about them, about their experiments. About how they’ve been gunning down civilians like they’re targets in a shooting gallery. They’re like ghosts now, but their weapons are real. I don’t know how much of it is true, but I’m not willing to find out the hard way.

God, I hope Zara and Luis make it back. I don’t even want to think about the alternative.

We’ve got a plan, such as it is. We’ve fortified the place as much as we can. The undead don't seem to be able to climb fences or get through doors as well as humans do, but that doesn’t mean we can afford to let our guard down. The windows are covered, the perimeter's constantly monitored. The generator’s the only thing that gives us any sense of normalcy. It's like we're living in a bubble, just waiting for it to pop.

I used to wonder if we’d ever be free of this. I don’t know if that's even possible anymore. All we can do is survive—make sure we have enough food, keep the generator running, and pray we don’t get caught in the crossfire of something bigger than us.

But what I wouldn't give for a little peace. Just one quiet day where I can sit down and forget about all of this. Maybe even take a walk without looking over my shoulder.

Zara and Luis should’ve been back by now. It’s almost dark. If they don’t show up soon, I’ll have to go out and look for them. I don’t want to—I've already put too much at risk—but I can’t leave them out there. A group are heading out towards the gas station and try to search for them and try to find more fuel.

Maybe it’ll be a quiet night. Maybe the Raiders won’t make an appearance. Maybe the undead will stay where they belong. But I know that’s just wishful thinking. It’s always wishful thinking.

We’re running out of time.

Speltekniskt:
